Munich Advanced-Technology Center for High-Tech AI Chips

MACHT-AI is a development and training center for chip design in advanced technologies at the Technical University of Munich – Key Partner is TSMC.

MACHT-AI is currently the only center in Germany and Europe fully dedicated to training and research using FinFET technologies.

It is established at the Chair of AI Processor Design at the Technical University of Munich, under the leadership of Professor Hussam Amrouch, the Founding Director.

MACHT-AI is jointly funded by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Bavarian Ministry of Science.

MACHT-AI aims to train researchers at the TSMC FinFET technology and develop highly efficient AI chips with successful silicon tape-outs using the TSMC’s 16nm and 7nm technology nodes.

Key Objectives

Providing students and researchers with professional training in chip design (digital and analog) using TSMC FinFET technology.

Developing ultra-efficient AI chips beyond classical architectures using highly customized RISC-V processors, brain-inspired computing algorithms, and neuromorphic computing principles.

Demonstrating multiple successful tape-out chip per year. Target technologies are TSMC’s 16nm and 7nm .

Bavaria’s Ministry of Science and the Arts, Markus Blume:

“AI chips are the currency of the future—this holds true for both the economy and our scientific community. To remain competitive, independent, and sovereign, we aim to train our own talent and develop our own technologies. With MACHT-AI and our partnership with TSMC, we have the ideal foundation for this goal: we are creating a platform that connects world-class science with leading international companies. And thanks to our collaboration with TSMC, we can train Bavarian talent in the world’s most advanced chip technologies. My special thanks go to Professor Hussam Amrouch and TUM for their dedication and expertise—both are key to the success of MACHT-AI.”

Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Hubert Aiwanger:

“MACHT-AI can help close the talent gap in Europe, as there is a shortage of specialized professionals capable of working with such complex technologies. It is an important building block to further strengthen Bavaria’s position in the leading-edge fields of AI and chip design.”

Professor Dr. Thomas Hofmann, President of TU Munich:

“With Prof. Hussam Amrouch, a recognized hardware expert at the Technical University of Munich who recently presented his own AI chip, the new AI center MACHT-AI is being established. In addition to educating students and researchers in FinFET technology, the goal of the new center is to develop highly efficient AI chips. We are excited to build this new center at TUM and look forward to future collaboration with the leading semiconductor manufacturer TSMC.”
